We took a 30 minute tour of the theatre with a woman who was very knowledgable about the history of the theatre.  She offered many historical facts and things one cannot find online.

The theatre construction was begun in 1821 by the Duchess of Parma, the former wife of Napoleon I.  In later years, there were renovations done.  Around 1850, the theatre was redone with the classic red velvet that exists today.  In 1907 the stage lighting became electrified.

On our tour, we went onto the main floor where workers were preparing for the annual Verdi Festival.  We then went to one of the boxes to see how the more wealthy patrons would enjoy opera.

After seeing this part of the theatre, we went upstairs to a dance area and a public meetings room.  This was also adorned with colorful paintings.

I'd love to see a Verdi opera here but I'd pick Otello as my choice instead of Don Carlo.

This is worth a visit if you're in Parma.
